Making Source
A conversation with Petrichor Oils on translating mountain water into scent.
Sweetwater × Petrichor Oils · Cape Town · 2026
“How do you make water smell?”
Not salt water. Not rain, exactly. I wanted to capture fresh water close to its source: moving through mountain stone, moss, trees and damp earth.
I first met Nics through SaunaHaüs, where I have been a guide since its inception. She creates the essential oils we use in the sauna rituals and led an early workshop for the guides on their properties, uses and cautions.
Scent was already a meaningful part of how I facilitated. It could change the atmosphere of a room, bring someone into their body and make a moment more immediate.
So when I began imagining the Sweetwater Atelier beyond sheepskins, scent felt like the obvious next step.
I wanted Sweetwater to become a fully sensory collection over time: objects and formulations chosen not only for how they look, but for how they feel and what they awaken. If sheepskins offered touch, warmth and grounding, scent would offer another pathway into presence.

There was an immediate meeting point between Sweetwater and Petrichor Oils.
Petrichor is the smell of rain meeting dry earth. Source was inspired by fresh water moving through the Cape mountains. Both began with water, earth and the atmosphere created when they meet.
The question was where to begin.
Nics and I spoke about the landscape and the feeling I wanted the scent to hold. We pulled cards. Then we began smelling.
It was a true collaboration, but we found the scent surprisingly quickly. We were in sync.

The Scent Story
Inspired by the mountain springs that flow through the valleys of the Cape, Source captures the quiet purity of water at its beginning. She is kind, sweet, gentle and soft. Before she reaches the rivers and oceans, she journeys over ancient stone, through emerald moss, beneath towering trees and into the rich, living earth. The air is cool and crisp, carrying the scent of damp soil, weathered wood and the subtle greenery that thrives where water gives life. It is a fragrance that feels grounding yet refreshing—an invitation to return to nature, to stillness and to where everything begins. A return to source.
The Spirit of the Ingredients
Every ingredient has been chosen not only for its aroma, but for the energy it brings.
Cedarwood offers strength, stability and a deep connection to the earth. Speaking authentically.
Petitgrain clears the mind and encourages emotional balance and renewal.
Clary Sage inspires intuition, clarity and gentle transformation.
Amber wraps the fragrance in warmth, comfort and quiet resilience.
Oakmoss evokes the ancient forest floor, symbolising wisdom, endurance and the timeless cycles of nature.
Terrasol lends the rich mineral character of damp earth after rain, grounding us in the present moment.
Orris Absolute brings elegance, patience and inner refinement, reminding us that beauty often takes time to emerge.
Violet Leaf Absolute captures the freshness of dew-covered foliage and represents hope, humility and new beginnings.
African Immortelle carries the spirit of resilience and healing, long revered for its ability to soothe both body and soul.
Alaskan Cedarwood adds the cool, clean breath of mountain forests, bringing serenity and spaciousness.
Geosmin is the unmistakable aroma of rain meeting dry earth— the essence of petrichor itself. It speaks of renewal, life's continuous cycle and our innate connection to the natural world.
Together, these ingredients create more than a fragrance. They tell the story of water finding its way through the Cape mountains—awakening the senses, restoring the spirit and inviting us back to our own source.
